When it comes to selecting the best flooring for your home, Columbus, Ohio remodeling company NJW Construction pride ourselves on the ins and outs of home construction and renovation, especially when it comes to flooring.

Our clients often ask us for help selecting the right products and materials. One question we commonly hear is, “With so many options out there, how do you know what type or style of floor is best?”

What type of floor is best for high traffic areas?

No matter what type of room, if your family includes kids and pets, chances are you have a high-traffic house. In this case, we’d be concerned about the floors getting scratched, so durable hardwood or ceramic tiles make great options.

Is carpet best for bedrooms?

In the past, most people had carpet in their bedrooms. Carpet is soft, warm and feels good underfoot, making a bedroom feel comfy and cozy. These days, however, anything goes. Because a bedroom is typically a low traffic area in your home, you don’t have to be concerned as much with durability. This means you have free reign to choose whatever flooring type appeals to you most.

What are the best flooring options for every room in your home?

Flooring options for each room of the house are based on function, appearance and lifestyle. Here is a list of various rooms within a home and the type of flooring that we recommend.

Kid’s Playroom:

Since safety and sound issues are foremost in this room, carpet emerges as the best choice. Carpet not only cushions kids’ falls, it also absorbs sound waves which can reduce the noise level. Plus, some carpet is made from yarn that’s virtually nonabsorbent, which allows spills to be cleaned easily. Add affordable to the list of benefits and you’ve got a win-win-win situation.

Most homes have an outside welcome mat for family and guests to wipe their feet prior to entering. For this reason, just about any type of flooring will work in an entryway. If you have pets or active children, however, you may choose a flooring option that is durable and easy to clean like hardwood or tile. This way you won’t have to worry about little boots or paws that trek in a little dirt.

Wood flooring and tile are popular choices for the kitchen. Hardwood flooring adds natural beauty and warmth, can be stained to complement your cabinetry, comes in different grain patterns and widths, and never goes out of style. Ceramic or porcelain tiles are tough and durable, come in different colors and patterns, are spill-resistant, and can be cut and arranged into unique designs.

Water splashed from the tub or shower and the high humidity in this room require flooring that won’t be affected by moisture. Laminates and hardwood floors, which absorb moisture, aren’t recommended, but ceramic tile is a good choice. And if you use natural stone or marble, seal them with a protective coating.

Living Room:

If you have a formal living room that doesn’t see a lot of action, any type of flooring will be appropriate. If your living room is more of a recreational room where you watch television, eat snacks, entertain guests, and generally hang out, choose a floor material that is more durable. Hardwood floors broken up with accent rugs create smaller seating areas within one large room. Cork floors are resilient and feel warm during winter. Stained concrete floors are modern and clean. It really depends on your design aesthetic and what works best for your lifestyle.

Our goal at NJW Construction is to make homes that stand the test of time, and that includes the flooring. We take your lifestyle into account when determining which floor material to use for each room. Contact us to help you decide! We serve those in Columbus, Ohio, and the surrounding areas.
