What are tiny houses and why are so many people joining the movement? As your Columbus Ohio remodeling experts, we typically see people asking for “more” space, not less. However, over the past several years we have been hearing about small homes. The average tiny house ranges from 100-500 square feet. In contrast, the typical American home is around 2000+ square feet and only 1% of homebuyers acquire houses of 1,000 square feet or less.
What is the reason for the popularity of tiny houses?
- Simplified living
- Environmentally more friendly
- Financial–skipping or reducing debt
- Easier to maintain
- More time and freedom
The emphasis of a tiny home is on the design rather than the size. In that aspect the idea of a tiny house is appealing, you can focus solely on great design and function! We always like to learn from new trends and take away how we can help our clients in their renovations. We can take this trend and utilize it in our renovations, if that is something you are interested in… simplify your living spaces. Simple living sounds great, and the idea of a smaller space to clean is always nice. Our guess is that you could easily live in a tiny home if it were one person . . . but we’re not sure about sharing that small of a space with someone else, or an entire family.
While you don’t have to go extremely tiny to get on board with simpler living, it is also on the rise that more and more, couples, and families are choosing to trade in space for simplicity. From college grads to retirees the appeal of a miniature home spans the ages. Shrinking square footage not only cuts down on chores — it’s a lifestyle change all about living with less and decreasing environmental impact over time.
