Purchasing a home comes with its own laundry list of challenges and anxieties. Customizing your home purchase shouldn’t add to that! Finding the right location, paying the right price, and passing inspection are just a few hurdles homeowners must jump through to land their new property. A recent client of ours, John, purchased his new property in Upper Arlington but knew that there were a few things he wanted to change within the home before moving in.
With time left on his lease, he decided to renovate these items prior to moving in, and NJW Renovations Unlimited was there to help. The home had several spaces within the footprint that needed updating, including:
- The primary bathroom
- The basement
- The living room fireplace
- The hard-wood flooring
- The garage and front porch
We asked John to share about his remodel and experience working alongside NJW Renovations Unlimited.
Customizing Your Home Purchase: John Q&A
What spaces did you have remodeled with NJW Renovations Unlimited?
I had them mainly do the primary bathroom and finish half of the basement, among some other things. In the primary bathroom, they removed the bath, sink/vanity, toilet, and floor. We rearranged the layout of the space and installed a new toilet, put in new sinks with a new granite counter, installed a new mirror and lighting, heated tile floors, and new hardware.
In the basement, they removed old asbestos tile floors, put in new vinyl wood flooring, overhead canned lighting, drywall, and installed a new staircase with a banister.
Additionally, they updated the outside of the fireplace in the living room, re-stained the hardwood floors on the main level, and created a beverage center under the existing wet bar. On the exterior of the home, we stained the columns on the front porch and installed a new custom garage door and front door. They also replaced all the interior doors and repainted the interior and exterior of the home.
What was the goal of the remodel? Was the goal met?
I didn’t really have an explicit goal; I had just purchased the house in August 2021 and still had some time on my lease so thought it would be a good idea to do some renovations/modifications to my house. Ultimately, I accomplished what I set out to do.
What is your favorite aspect of your new remodel?
I love my newly stained hardwood floors, primary bathroom, and basement. If I had to choose one, it would be the bathroom.
If you could change anything about your remodel, what would it be?
Living in my house now over the past few months, I would have probably added some additional things which I will probably do once I get a little more settled in my home and reevaluate what other things I want done.
How did the remodel improve your everyday living in your home?
Again, I did this before I moved in which is a unique situation that I was fortunate enough to have. I think had I not done it, the primary bath would have felt too cramped and the basement would have been just one giant storage area instead of a “livable” space.
The Experience:
What was your overall experience working with NJW Renovations Unlimited?
Excellent. Communication was very good and I liked the itemized list of all the things they were doing/did on a monthly basis. I would definitely work with them again.
What advice would you offer to someone who is remodeling a space in their home?
Make sure you select a good contractor, so you don’t have to do the same job twice.
Did you contact other companies about remodeling your home? If so, what made you decide to work with NJW Renovations Unlimited?
No, both of my parents have used NJW Renovations Unlimited, and I knew they would do a good job so I decided to go with them based on those recommendations.
